“Spirit” Week

HSINCHU -- Tuesday, the 11th of March, marks the start of what was called “Spirit Week”. The SRC came up with this idea in hopes that these 5 days will stimulate some bit of school spirit in the student body, especially after hearing remarks about our previous Valentine’s Day dance saying our school was weak in terms of how much vivacity we displayed.

From Tuesday to Saturday, students were able to do something a little different from the norm. Tuesday, we were encouraged to do up our hair in a way that would stop passersby and get a questioning look from our parents. Wacky Hair Day, they called it.

But, when people arrived to school that day, the majority of the students hadn’t none anything much. On average, the students either tied or gelled their hair in a style they didn’t usually have it in. The others didn’t bother. Most of the students also did not come to school with already wacky hair. Instead, they came to school, looked around to see if anyone else had done anything, then decided to do something for the fun of it. Jim Kim, for example, one of the students who were more unafraid to do something crazy, wore a wig with long, crazy, black hair. Most of the girls simply used colored hair-ties and dolled themselves up, literally.

Surprisingly, the SRC special events officers didn’t show too much enthusiasm in it either. Kevin Liao brought in a curly black haired wig that was hardly seen on his head throughout most of the day. Eugene Huang just had on a hat, and Justin Chang really did nothing. Just got a haircut. Talk about school spirit...

There were also such events as pajama day, clash/mix & match day, teacher student switch, and Saturday, where the students dressed themselves formally because we hosted the World Scholars Competition. Let’s just say that the majority of the school did not attend.

I don’t think it is for me to decide whether or not the students displayed the school’s true spirit to the best they could. Some students may argue that they did, by doing up their hair in the craziest way they could think of, or by wearing boxers and a blanket to school. Others may say that this “Spirit Week” was nothing more than a week where the students had the chance to loosen up on the way they dressed to school. Once again, the spirit of the HIS students has been questioned. What will be next?
